OUR CHIHUAHUA NAMED LADY
Like many of you, I have very fond memories with our family dog. My entire childhood our family has had pets. One of my favorite memories is playing dress-up with our Chihuahua named Lady.
Everyday I would take my doll clothes and use them to play with Lady. She was awesome! So patient and just happy to participate in my playtime with her. Lady was short-hair and with a golden color coat.
Mom named her Lady, because Mom said she was so gracious and sophisticated in her demeanor. Lady and I would walk to run errands for Mom close to home. Everyone in our neighborhood admired Lady’s outfits. No doubt about it, she was the best dressed Chihuahua in town!
Lady was very patient with me. She would allow me to dress her up with shoes, mittens, dresses and bonnets. A dog feels safe when he/she will lay on their back and expose their belly. And that is exactly what Lady would do when I got out my doll clothes to play dress-up with her.
She did have her limits with my play dress-up. Usually I could count on Lady giving me a good solid 40 minutes. When she was done though, Lady would stand on all fours and shake vigorously to remove all clothing. It was understood between us that dress-up playtime was over.
LADY’S NEW CLOTHES
Mom had a sewing room with a Singer sewing machine. She also would knit and crochet. I remember all the cute doilies Mom made to decorate her tables. Mom made most of our clothes too! Us sisters would get new Summer dresses and our brothers would get new shorts.
She knitted sweaters for us, and made skirts and pants too! Mom also made all of our doll outfits. Lady enjoyed special attention from Mom as well. Every once in awhile, Mom would make an outfit special for Lady.
PERFECTLY MATCHING
A real joy for me, was when Mom would make matching identical outfits for me and for Lady! I couldn’t wait to run an errand for Mom just to show off our perfectly matching new outfits. As it turned out, Lady and I, were great advertising. People in our neighborhood started calling Mom asking if she would make matching outfits for their child and dog!
Lady lived up to her name. She walked gracefully and sophisticated in all of her outfits. Everyone wanted to stop to pet Lady and admire her clothes. This little Chihuahua was “dog smart” too! When it was time for her to run and play with our brothers, she wanted all of her clothes taken off first. This alone impressed Mom very much because Lady didn’t want to get her outfits dirty.
WITH US TO THE END
Lady endeared herself to everyone in the family but most especially to me. I was the only one who played dress-up with her. An amazing little Chihuahua who was a part of our family to the end of her natural life.
