Pedro Carrion is a 72-year-old homeless man that loves his pet pooch more than anything else. They live in Miami Lakes near the Palmetto Expressway. The people who know him and his dog, Sky Dim, say that the gentle and kind man takes care of his pooch better than he does himself. The love between a homeless man and his dog touched the entire community.
There would be times when it was raining, and he would get wet while pushing his cart. His dog would be in the cart, safe and dry under an umbrella. Any money that he earns mostly goes to the dog’s meals and wellbeing. He takes Sky to a vet anytime the dog is sick.
Support
Pedro loves his dog so much because he has been through a lot and Sky is always there to support him. He is his source of strength and happiness.
He is also his service dog. Sky helps him calm down and relieve stress.
So it was particularly devastating for him when he woke up one day saw that the pup was gone. His leash was still there, but the pooch was nowhere in sight. He frantically searched for the pup everywhere, not knowing if he was stolen or if somebody mistakenly thought that he was a stray and rescued him.
According to Pedro, it felt like losing a child. A void was created in his life, and it made his situation worse.
A caring community
Once word got out that the dog was gone and Pedro was not doing well because of that, concerned community members joined together to help find him. They went on social media and shared photos of the pooch and they even started a GoFundMe page.
They wanted to raise funds so that they can help Pedro get back on his feet. A lot of people were touched by Pedro’s story, and the money started coming in. They were able to raise more than 10,000 dollars.
All the hype that was generated resulted in Sky being returned. Someone anonymously took the dog back to his grateful owner. He was overjoyed to finally have his baby back.
People are now helping Pedro apply for disability so that he doesn’t run out of support when the donations are gone.
