Joe and April Sullivan live in a house that is built in the middle of a 40-acre property. Visiting them means you need a car to get to their property. That is why it was a big surprise for the couple when an injured dog found her way to their home and even went up to their porch.
They were baffled as to how the dog was able to drag itself from the road towards their home and up the steps. She was badly injured at that time and was very weak. They felt really bad for the stray, and they wanted to help her. Both of them were dog lovers and had several dogs living on their property.
Looking for help
Seeing that the dog was not aggressive, they approached her and gave her some food. They were surprised that for a stray, she was very gentle and loving. Even in her weakened state, she would lift her head to try and give them kisses.
After the dog had some food, Joe lifted her up and brought her to their car. She needed medical treatment and they guessed that her injuries might have come from being hit by a car. At the vet, they learned that she had damaged nerves and would require a lot of attention and care.
They bought her medication then brought her back to their home. By that time, Joe had already decided to name her Betsy and let her live permanently in their home.
New family
Betsy soon recovered and started to create a close relationship with the other dogs. But she was closer to another rescue, a small pup named Hank, that the couple brought in. Her maternal instincts came out and she took the new pup under her wing. They would always be by each other’s side and do everything together. It was as if they found a kindred spirit in one another.
According to the couple, they are happy with every dog that came into their home. But as for now, they would be enough. They said that they never know. If a dog like Betsy wanders in again, looking for help, they might take her in as well.
